Part of my workflow for years now
I started using it since 2009 when Papers was a standalone company. Some up and down but the software is now stable for years. I use “reeder” to cure my ongoing journal articles. When selected, I store and then read my pdf’s in ReadCube Papers. Then I trash the useless one’s or I organise them in folders/tag to use them as reference manager (with “Ulysses”). Also my “go to” app during conferences to pick interesting papers to read after. And tools of choice during grand round teaching. Being able to give a student the good reference just in time is a game changer, I think…
Ugly app with half baked sync
Papers was a decent app before it was merged with ReadCube. This app is really ugly and doesn’t feel nor behave as a regular iPhone/iPad app. The UI is confusing if not outright nonsensical – why doesn’t the "Add to folder" button display the folders in their hierarchical order? It makes the button barely usable if you have a decently long hierarchical structure in your library. The worst part is probably the sync. Editing a note while the app is syncing? The text you recently added will be wiped out. You’re having a poor internet connection? Your changes will be lost, but of course you won’t be notified that an issue happened. All reference managers are bad in my opinion, and ReadCube isn’t an exception.
Good user experience but disappointed by the search engine and connection with google scholar
I really like the user interface and features, one of the best user experience on literature review support app. However I am very disappointed by the results provided by the search engine. I was expecting to compensate with the plugin for google scholar but have been disappointed by the results too when importing to the library. And without these last two features the good user interface is almost useless for me. So in my opinion there are still work to do on search engine, plugin and metadata reconciliation.
Really worth giving a shot, it takes no time to master
I have been using Zotero and Mendeley a lot, switching from one another depending on my coworkers reference system. And this had been painful: mendeley is far to linked with Elvesier and yet lacks basic features such as full search in all papers. Plus no iPad app. ReadCube works very well on IPad, it’s just to bad that no Linux standalone app exists. I tried Wine without success. The web app is more than decent but it isn’t always practical. The pro version is cheap in my opinion, give it a try
